Polynesian Tree Rat

Polynesian tree rats are one of three main rat species found in Hawaii. Smaller and more slender than both roof rats and Norway rats, they are excellent climbers and are often found in trees, shrubs, rooftops, and elevated areas around homes. Originally introduced to Hawaii by early Polynesian voyagers, they have been established in the islands for over a thousand years and are well adapted to the local environment.

Despite their smaller size, Polynesian tree rats can cause meaningful damage to gardens, fruit trees, stored food, and even vehicle wiring. They are skilled at entering attics, wall voids, and storage areas, where they build nests using shredded plant material, paper, and fabric. Their droppings and urine contaminate surfaces and can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
