About Norway Rats
Norway rats are the largest of the three main rat species found on Oahu. Also known as brown rats or sewer rats, they are heavy-bodied rodents that prefer ground-level habitats. They commonly burrow along foundations, under concrete slabs, near dumpsters, and in dense ground cover. Their burrows can undermine structures and damage landscaping.
Norway rats are primarily nocturnal and are excellent swimmers, often entering buildings through sewer lines and damaged drain pipes. They contaminate food, damage wiring and plumbing, and can spread diseases including leptospirosis — a serious health concern in Hawaii. Their gnawing can cause structural damage and even electrical fires.
