Feral Cats & Mongoose

Feral cats and mongoose are two of the most common wildlife nuisances on Oahu. Feral cats establish colonies under buildings, in parking structures, and around commercial properties, leaving behind strong-smelling urine, droppings, and scattered refuse from scavenging. They can also spread diseases such as toxoplasmosis and carry fleas, ticks, and other parasites.

The small Indian mongoose, originally introduced to Hawaii to control rats in sugar cane fields, has instead become a pest itself. Mongoose are active during the day and are known for raiding trash cans, pet food bowls, and garden areas. They can carry leptospirosis and rabies (though rabies has not been established in Hawaii), and they prey on native bird eggs and other wildlife.
